The simple compatibility rule
An NFC business card can be tapped only by a phone that supports reading NFC tags and has the required NFC behaviour available. Compatibility can also depend on device settings, software version and where the NFC antenna is located on the phone.
That is why a printed QR backup is useful: if a tap does not work, the customer can scan the same destination instead.
How a customer should try the tap
- Unlock the phone and keep the screen active.
- Bring the NFC card slowly near the likely antenna area rather than tapping the middle of the display.
- Hold it close for a moment until the phone shows a notification or opens the destination.
- If nothing happens, move the card around the upper or rear area of the phone.
- Check whether NFC is available and enabled on the device.
- Use the QR code backup if the phone cannot read the tag.
Why a tap sometimes fails even on an NFC phone
Wrong antenna position
The NFC reader is not always in the centre of the phone, so the card may need to move slightly.
NFC setting or mode
Some devices provide an NFC control that can be turned off or affected by device modes.
Case or interference
Very thick cases, metal accessories or another NFC object close to the reader can reduce reliability.
Design your business card for real-world compatibility
- Print a clear “Tap here” indicator close to the chip area.
- Include a large enough QR code with good contrast.
- Send NFC and QR to the same mobile-friendly destination where practical.
- Test the finished card before dispatch or distribution.
- Keep the destination URL working even if your profile details change.
Do not promise that every phone will tap successfully. A well-designed smart card provides both NFC and QR paths so the customer still has a simple fallback.
Common questions
Does the customer need to install an app?
For a standard NFC card configured to open a normal web URL, a special provider app is typically not required. The phone still needs a compatible browser and internet access for online content.
Does NFC work through a phone case?
Many normal cases do not prevent NFC, but thickness, metal components and accessories can affect the read. If a tap fails, try without the case or use the QR backup.
Can one NFC card work with both Android and iPhone?
A web-link NFC card can be designed for broad cross-platform use, but actual tap behaviour depends on each device. Test and keep a QR backup for the widest practical coverage.
